Carolina Reapers PWHL Expansion Team Concept

Challenge: Design an expansion team for the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

Goals: Develop the team’s visual identity, and design a logo, home and away jerseys, and fan merchandise.

RESEARCH + INSPIRATION

As someone born and raised in South Carolina, I wanted to create a concept for a Professional Women’s Hockey League expansion team in the Carolinas. After doing research into the history of both North and South Carolina, I initially was going to name the team the Carolina Flight due to North Carolina’s aviation history. However, to avoid confusion with the existing PWHL team the Boston Fleet, I decided to go with the Carolina Reapers, which I felt would be a fun, bold mascot.

Process

I created a color palette that incorporates red, blue and off-white to represent the colors in the North and South Carolina state flags. I sketched multiple iterations of the reaper logo, and decided to further develop an option that would include a capital “C” to represent Carolina.

The final designs include a logo, word mark, and home and away jerseys. I positioned the nameplate at the bottom of the jersey so that it would still be visible for athletes with longer hair. For the jersey mockups, I used images I took of the South Carolina Women’s Ice Hockey team at the University of South Carolina.
